The Aviation Industry Association of New Zealand has welcomed the Government’s proposed overhaul of the Civil Aviation Authority rules, describing it as long overdue and critical for a modern, efficient aviation system.
Speaking on Newstalk ZB’s Ryan Bridge podcast, AIANZ Chief Executive Simon Wallace said the 23‑project rules update programme—targeted for completion within two years—could deliver significant benefits for safety, efficiency, and economic growth, provided the CAA is adequately resourced and able to move at pace.
Key areas include the modernisation of pilot training and licensing, clearer competency requirements for agricultural drone operators, and reduced regulatory burden across aircraft maintenance and airport operations. Wallace also highlighted ongoing fuel cost pressures for operators, noting sharp increases in aviation fuel prices despite recent diesel supply support.
Safety will remain paramount as AIANZ works closely with the CAA and Government to ensure the reforms deliver practical, timely outcomes for the aviation sector.
