The Aviation Industry Association says fuel cost pressures are already being felt across the sector, despite government assurances that jet fuel stocks remain at normal levels.
Speaking on TVNZ’s Breakfast, AIA Chief Executive Simon Wallace said the industry has been working with government on a dedicated aviation fuel response plan, expected to be finalised shortly.
The proposed plan is likely to align with New Zealand’s national fuel response framework and would prioritise life‑preserving and essential aviation services, including aeromedical flights, search and rescue, and firefighting. The industry is also calling for recognition of agricultural aviation, particularly during the critical autumn fertiliser application period.
Simon highlighted the strain rising fuel costs are placing on operators, noting jet fuel prices have increased by around 70%, with aviation gas up 100%. While some operators have introduced fuel surcharges, those providing contracted services to government agencies often have limited ability to pass on costs.
The AIA will continue engaging with government and other key sectors to ensure the response plan provides clarity, certainty, and protection for essential aviation services.
